Tattoo removal picosecond laser is a non-invasive medical technique used to remove tattoos by breaking up the ink pigments using ultra-short pulses of light. Forever Institut, a pioneer in laser tattoo removal in Switzerland since 1997, uses the PicoSure (Geneva and Lausanne) and PicoPlus (Nyon) lasers to treat all types of ink, including resistant colours such as violet and turquoise"."

The Picosecond Laser is the latest breakthrough in laser technology, a revolution in tattoo removal! This laser is capable of emitting a picosecond pulse, which is 100 times shorter and more powerful than before. As a result, it is effective on certain stubborn colours and inks, where previous-generation lasers failed.

What is laser tattoo removal?

Permanent tattoo removal is now possible thanks to picosecond laser tattoo removal, a cutting-edge medical technology that breaks down the ink pigments in your skin. This method transforms the colour particles into microscopic fragments that your body naturally eliminates via the lymphatic system.

At Forever Institut, pioneer of laser tattoo removal in Switzerland since 1997, we use lasers PicoSure in Geneva and Lausanne, and the PicoPlus in Nyon. These latest-generation devices emit ultra-short pulses – a hundred times shorter and more powerful than previous technologies – for optimal results on all ink colours.

Treatment process: from consultation to results

Session duration : 15-60 min
Interval between sessions : 6-8 weeks

Mandatory prior consultation

Before any session, a free consultation with our laser specialists is required. This crucial step allows us to analyse your skin type, assess the characteristics of your tattoo (ink density, colours, age, presence of relief) and establish a personalised treatment plan with a detailed quote.

The number of sessions varies depending on several factors: a superficial amateur tattoo disappears more quickly than a dense professional tattoo. The age of the tattoo also plays a role, with older inks often responding better to treatment.

How does a session work?

Each session lasts between 15 and 60 minutes, depending on the area being treated. An anaesthetic cream may be prescribed and applied one hour beforehand to minimise discomfort. The laser then projects a beam of light that is directly attracted to the coloured pigments in your tattoo.

The ultra-short pulses fragment the ink particles into microscopic dust that your immune system gradually eliminates via white blood cells. It is common to see slight immediate whitening, sometimes followed by small blisters, which must not be pierced. A protective dressing is applied for several days.

Results and duration of treatment

The tattoo lightening process is gradual and visible from the first few weeks. Although it is impossible to guarantee 100% removal, a significant improvement is achieved in most cases. The effectiveness depends on the type of ink used, the depth of the tattoo and your individual metabolism.

Sessions are spaced 6 to 12 weeks apart to allow your body to eliminate the fragmented pigments and heal completely. This patience is essential to optimise results and preserve the quality of your skin.

Precautions and contraindications

Before treatment

Do not expose the tattooed area to the sun for 5 weeks before your appointment, to avoid the risk of burning and hyperpigmentation. Also avoid self-tanning creams or capsules, which stimulate melanin and can therefore interfere with the treatment.

After each session

Never pierce any blisters - contact Forever Institut for a check. Protect the detatched area from UV rays until it has completely healed. Regularly apply the healing treatments recommended by your practitioner.

Absolute contraindications

Laser tattoo removal is not recommended in cases of active eczema, skin lesions in the area, a history of pathological scarring or melanoma. Pregnant women should postpone treatment until after childbirth.

Frequently asked questions about laser tattoo removal

Is laser tattoo removal painful?

Yes, laser tattoo removal is a procedure that causes discomfort, often compared to the repeated impact of a rubber band on the skin. The intensity varies according to the area treated, the density of the ink and individual sensitivity. At Forever Institut in Geneva, Nyon and Lausanne, an anaesthetic cream is systematically prescribed and applied one hour before the session to minimise pain. The PicoSure and PicoPlus lasers used by Forever Institut emit ultra-short pulses that reduce residual heat in the tissue, making the procedure better tolerated than with previous-generation nanosecond lasers.

How many sessions should be scheduled?

It is impossible to predict exactly how many sessions will be needed until the tattoo has been assessed in consultation. As a guide, Forever Institut practitioners estimate that a superficial amateur tattoo can be significantly lightened in 3 to 6 sessions, while a dense professional tattoo - particularly with black or coloured inks in multiple layers - may require 8 to 12 sessions, or even more. The age of the tattoo, the depth of the pigments, the nature of the inks and the metabolism of each patient directly influence the result. The sessions are spaced 6 to 12 weeks apart to allow the body to eliminate the ink fragments between each procedure.

Does laser treatment leave scars?

No, when used correctly, the picosecond laser leaves no scars. Unlike invasive methods such as dermabrasion or surgical excision, PicoSure and PicoPlus laser tattoo removal preserves the integrity of the epidermis: it targets only the ink pigments without damaging the surrounding tissue. Once the tattoo has been removed, the skin looks natural again in the vast majority of cases. Exception: if the tattoo itself created a hypertrophic scar when it was created, this will remain visible after tattoo removal. At Forever Institut, each treatment is carried out under medical supervision by practitioners trained in laser dermatology, which minimises the risk of undesirable effects.

Can all skin types be treated?

Yes, the PicoSure and PicoPlus lasers used by Forever Institut are suitable for all phototypes, including dark skins (types IV to VI of the Fitzpatrick classification) which were difficult - if not impossible - to treat with traditional nanosecond lasers. In Nyon, the PicoPlus laser offers an additional advantage for dark and matt skins: it reduces the risk of post-treatment depigmentation thanks to its specific wavelengths. The compulsory prior consultation at Forever Institut enables the phototype to be assessed and the treatment parameters to be adapted to maximise effectiveness in complete safety.

What happens if my tattoo does not come off completely?

Some inks are more resistant to laser treatment than others. The most stubborn colours are generally yellow and white, because they reflect light rather than absorbing it. The PicoSure picosecond laser effectively treats black, grey, blue, green, violet and turquoise inks - colours on which previous-generation lasers often failed. In contrast, Nyon's PicoPlus excels on red. During the initial consultation at Forever Institut, the practitioner assesses the colours present and sets realistic expectations for the expected result. In cases where complete erasure is not guaranteed, a significant improvement is achieved in the vast majority of situations, enabling a quality covering to be obtained.
