What is Ulthera® (Ultherapy)?
Ulthera®, marketed under the Ultherapy® brand, is a medical device that uses high-intensity micro-focused ultrasound (HIFU) to deeply firm and tone the skin without surgery. Developed by Merz Aesthetics, this technology is the first and only to combine a real-time ultrasound imaging system with the emission of therapeutic ultrasound energy.
In practical terms, Ultherapy precisely heats the tissues to 60-70°C at three distinct depths: 1.5 mm (superficial dermis), 3.0 mm (deep dermis) and 4.5 mm (superficial musculoaponeurotic layer, or SMAS). This last depth corresponds exactly to the plane that surgeons treat during a facelift. Under the effect of heat, existing collagen fibres retract immediately, while a process of neocollagenesis is triggered to produce new collagen and elastin over the following months.
What sets Ulthera® apart from other HIFU devices on the market is precisely its integrated imager: the practitioner can view the targeted skin layers in real time, guaranteeing precise treatment, safe treatment and maximum results.
Who is Ulthera® treatment suitable for?
Ultherapy is aimed at anyone with sagging skin on the face, neck or décolleté, or on certain parts of the body such as the buttocks, knees, etc., who wants to correct this sign of ageing without resorting to surgery. The best candidates are people aged between 30 and 60 with a noticeable but moderate loss of tone.
From the age of 30: a preventive approach to Ultherapy
From the age of 30, the natural production of collagen begins to slow down. Ulthera can then be considered as a preventive treatment to maintain skin tone and slow down the appearance of the first signs of ageing. Forever Institut doctors recommend an annual maintenance session from this age onwards for patients who wish to anticipate the effects of ageing.
Between 40 and 60: a visible lifting effect
This is the age group where Ultherapy gives the most spectacular results. When the loss of firmness of the lower face, neck or eyelids becomes visible, Ultherapy can help restore a redefined oval, firmer skin and a more youthful, dynamic appearance, without surgery.
The benefits of Ultherapy
Deep skin firming
Ulthera®'s micro-focused ultrasound is delivered at depths of 1.5 mm, 3.0 mm and 4.5 mm. At 4.5 mm, the SMAS is reached, the same layer targeted during a surgical facelift. Under the effect of heat (60-70°C), the collagen fibres retract immediately, producing a slight tightening effect that is immediately perceptible. Then, gradually, the body manufactures new collagen that restores the skin's support framework.
Natural, lasting results
Ultherapy stimulates your body's own natural production of collagen. The result is extremely natural: your skin is remodelled from within, with no artificial changes to volumes. The effects develop over 3 to 6 months, the time it takes for the body to produce new collagen, and last between 12 and 18 months.
No social exclusion
Ultherapy is a non-invasive method: no surgery, no recovery time. You can resume all your activities as soon as the treatment is over.
Results and duration of the Ultherapy effect
Immediately after the session, a slight sensation of firming is perceptible. The real effects of Ulthera gradually become apparent around 3 months after the treatment, as new collagen forms. The final result is generally visible 6 months after the procedure.
The Ultherapy effect lasts between 12 and 18 months. Additional treatments can be carried out to slow down the natural ageing process. The range of results varies according to the age, skin quality, lifestyle and metabolism of each patient.
To boost results, the doctors at Forever Institut recommend combining Ulthera with Radiesse® injections, which also stimulate collagen production by complementary mechanisms.

Before any Ulthera session, a consultation with one of our doctors is essential. This will enable us to assess the suitability of the treatment, define the areas to be targeted and inform you of the procedures and expected results. This stage determines the safety and effectiveness of your HIFU treatment.
The Ultherapy session step by step
The practitioner begins by cleansing and disinfecting the skin, then marks out the areas to be treated with a dermatological pencil. The Ulthera® applicator is then slid over these areas, continuously connected to the ultrasound screen to display the depth of action in real time. This feature, unique to Ulthera among all HIFU devices, guarantees maximum precision and optimum safety throughout the procedure.
The treatment may cause a temporary sensation of heat and discomfort that varies according to the area and the sensitivity of each patient. Painkillers and anti-inflammatories may be prescribed to improve comfort.
Session duration
An Ulthera session lasts between 1? and 3 hours, depending on the areas treated. The recommended number of sessions is one, with the possibility of a second session 6 months to 1 year later, depending on the quality of the skin as assessed by the doctor. An annual maintenance session, less intense, is recommended to maintain results over the long term.

How many Ulthera sessions are needed and how often?
A single session of Ulthera® is generally enough to obtain very good results. The recommended number of sessions is one per year to two years, depending on the quality of the skin, as assessed by the doctor. For a preventive effect from the age of 30, Forever Institut doctors generally suggest an annual maintenance session.
When are the results of Ultherapy visible and how long do they last?
The first effects of Ulthera® appear progressively from 2 to 3 months after the session. The final result is visible 6 months after treatment, once the neocollagenesis process has been completed. The effects last between 12 and 18 months. The duration of results depends on the age, skin quality and lifestyle of each patient.
Is the Ulthera laser painful? What side effects can I expect?
Ulthera® uses ultrasound, so it is not a laser. The terminology «ulthera laser» is common but incorrect: it is micro-focused ultrasound technology (HIFU). The session may generate a sensation of heat and discomfort that varies according to the area and the patient's tolerance. Painkillers or analgesic gas may be prescribed. After the treatment, slight redness, distension and skin sensitivity may appear for a few hours to a few days. No social eviction is necessary.
Can I have an Ultherapy session in Geneva, Lausanne or Nyon?
Yes, the Ultherapy treatment is available at the three Forever Institut clinics in French-speaking Switzerland: at Geneva, à Lausanne and Nyon. Can Ultherapy be combined with other beauty treatments?
Yes, and the doctors at Forever Institut actively recommend it. Ulthera® combines very well with injections of Sculptra® or Radiesse®, which also stimulate collagen production by different mechanisms, along with': hyaluronic acid. for a volumising effect, or with the botulinic toxin to treat wrinkles on the upper face. This combined approach achieves harmonious, long-lasting results by simultaneously treating the deep structure and volumes of the face.
What are the contraindications to Ulthera HIFU facial treatment?
Ulthera® treatment is contraindicated in the event of pregnancy, open wounds or active infections in the area to be treated (cold sores, bacterial or viral infections), if you wear a pacemaker or electronic implants in the area to be treated, and for 6 months following the placement of tightening threads. All special situations are assessed during the compulsory prior medical consultation at our clinics in Geneva, Lausanne and Nyon.
