Laser tattoo removal is a medical procedure that uses ultra-short pulses of light to break up ink particles embedded in the dermis. At Forever Institut (Geneva, Lausanne, Nyon), the standard protocol varies from 5 to 15 sessions, depending on the colour of the ink, the size and age of the tattoo and the patient's phototype. The sessions are spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart to allow the immune system to eliminate the ink fragments.

You're thinking of having a tattoo removed, and you want to know how many sessions you'll need before your skin is clear. This is the first question asked by the vast majority of people who come to Forever Institut for a tattoo removal. laser tattoo removal and that's a legitimate question, because the answer is never the same from one case to the next.

Laser technology has advanced considerably in recent years. Today, the latest generation of medical lasers can remove tattoos with a precision and effectiveness that older techniques could not achieve. But the number of sessions required depends on a number of clearly identified factors: the colour of the ink, the size of the tattoo, how long it has been there, the density of the ink and your skin type.

In this article, we detail each of these criteria to help you understand what determines the duration of your protocol and what you can reasonably expect from the first sessions.

How does a laser remove a tattoo?

The principle is based on the selectivity of laser light. The beam emits very short, very powerful pulses that target the ink particles encysted in the dermis. Under the effect of heat, these particles fragment into micro-particles that the immune system can then eliminate naturally.

Each session reduces the concentration of ink in the skin. The discolouration is progressive: the tattoo fades with each session, until it disappears or becomes imperceptible. The interval between two sessions - generally six to eight weeks - gives the body time to evacuate the ink fragments and the skin time to regenerate.

The opinion of Dr Luigi L.Polla«The response to laser treatment depends as much on the skin as on the ink. A tattoo made with professional quality ink and several colours will require a longer protocol than a monochrome tattoo with black ink. During the initial consultation, we assess these parameters precisely in order to establish a realistic estimate of the number of sessions required». - Dr. Luigi L. Polla

How many sessions on average?

The usual range is between 5 and 15 sessions, depending on the case. According to the doctors at Forever Institut, a small amateur tattoo in black ink on light skin can be removed in 4 to 6 sessions. On the other hand, a large polychrome tattoo done by a professional using dense coloured inks may require 12 to 15 sessions, sometimes more.

The interval between two sessions is 6 to 8 weeks. This period is not an arbitrary constraint: it corresponds to the time needed for the body to evacuate the fragments of ink produced during the previous session and for the skin to regenerate completely.

This variability is explained by the following factors, which are detailed below.

Criteria for determining the number of sessions

1. The colour of the ink

This is the most important factor. Black ink absorbs all wavelengths of light, so it responds most quickly and completely to lasers. Red, orange and yellow inks are more selective: they require specific wavelengths and respond less well to standard lasers.

Green and blue inks are the most resistant. Some pigment formulations used in professional studios contain compounds that absorb laser light poorly, multiplying the number of sessions required.

2. The size and complexity of the tattoo

The size of the tattoo is not related to the effectiveness of tattoo removal. The density of the line does, however, play a role: a very heavy tattoo, with saturated areas of fill, will require more sessions than a tattoo with a fine line. The quality of the ink will also play an important role in the effectiveness of tattoo removal: inferior quality ink will take longer to remove.

3. Age of the tattoo

Counter-intuitively, an old tattoo is not always harder to remove. Over time, the body has already begun to naturally fragment some of the ink. A recent tattoo, less than a year old, has ink that is not yet well stabilised in the dermis and so may respond better to laser treatment.

In both cases, the protocol can be adapted. A tattoo that is more than ten years old can sometimes be treated in fewer sessions than one that is five years old, simply because some of the pigmentation has already faded.

4. Quality and type of ink

Tattoos made by amateurs or with low-quality inks are often easier to remove. The ink is generally less dense, deposited less deeply in the dermis, and more homogeneous. A professional studio tattoo, on the other hand, uses concentrated, multiple inks deposited with precision - which gives a superior aesthetic result, but makes tattoo removal more complex.

5. Your skin type

On fair skins (phototypes I to III), the contrast between the ink and the skin is maximal. The laser can work at higher fluences, which improves effectiveness at each session. On dark or matt skins (phototypes IV to VI), it is important to adjust the wavelength and to treat the tattoo with Nd:YAG to avoid any risk of hyperpigmentation.

6. Location on the body

Blood and lymph circulation in the treated area influences the speed at which ink fragments are eliminated. Tattoos located on the extremities (ankles, feet, hands) respond more slowly than those placed near the trunk, where lymphatic circulation is more active.
In practice, the Forever Institut teams note that a tattoo on the foot may require two to four extra sessions compared to the same tattoo on the arm or shoulder.

Number of sessions depending on the type of tattoo and ink colour

Criteria

Estimated sessions (Forever Institut)

Comment

Black or grey ink

7 to 10 sessions

The most reactive. Absorbs all wavelengths.

Red or orange ink

9 to 15 sessions

Specific wavelengths required. Result not guaranteed on yellow.

Green or blue ink

12 sessions or more

Resistant. Difficult pigment formulations.

Amateur tattoo, black ink

4 to 6 sessions

Less dense ink, superficial deposit.

Professional tattoo, monochrome

7 to 10 sessions

Concentrated ink, precise deposit.

Professional tattoo, polychrome

12 to 15 sessions

Protocol adapted ink by ink.

Fair skin (phototypes I-III)

Standard protocol

Optimum contrast, high fluency possible.

Matt or dark skin (IV-VI)

Progressive protocol (+2 to 4 sessions)

Nd:YAG, reduced fluence.

End locations

+2 to 4 sessions vs trunk

Slower lymphatic circulation.

Which laser technology is best for tattoo removal?

Not all lasers are created equal. For tattoo removal, the current reference technology is the picosecond laser, and this is precisely the equipment used at Forever Institut.

Le picosecond laser emits pulses 100 times shorter and more powerful than previous generation lasers. This infinitesimal pulse duration, of the order of a picosecond, or a thousandth of a billionth of a second, breaks up the ink particles into much smaller microparticles than with a conventional Q-switched laser. The immune system then eliminates them more quickly, which translates into better results on stubborn colours and resistant inks that are resistant to previous technologies.

During the initial consultation, our specialists determine the wavelength best suited to the dominant colour of your tattoo and your phototype. This is a decisive stage: selecting the wrong wavelength can be ineffective on certain colours, or cause avoidable skin reactions.

Make an appointment for a tattoo removal consultation

Each tattoo is unique. The only way to get an accurate estimate of the number of sessions - and therefore the cost and total duration of the treatment - is to consult our doctors.

At Forever Institut, the initial consultation enables us to analyse your tattoo, assess the colours present, determine your phototype and draw up a personalised protocol. A laser test can be carried out on the same day.

Our clinics in Geneva, Lausanne and Nyon offer laser tattoo removal consultations. Book an appointment directly online at www.forever-beauty.com or by telephone.

The Q-switched laser and the picosecond laser both fragment ink particles with short light pulses, but with a major difference in scale. The Q-switched laser emits pulses in the nanosecond range (one billionth of a second). The picosecond emits pulses 100 times shorter, of the order of a thousandth of a billionth of a second.
This difference has two practical consequences. The fragments of ink produced by the picosecond are smaller, and are therefore eliminated more quickly by the immune system. Picosecond is also more effective on resistant colours - greens, blues, yellows - which do not respond well to Q-switched. On a simple black monochrome tattoo, the two technologies give comparable results. It's on complex tattoos or difficult inks that the advantage of picosecond is clearest. It is precisely for this reason that Forever Institut has chosen the picosecond laser for all its tattoo removal protocols.

Laser hair removal and IPL hair removal are two photoepilation methods that use light to destroy the hair follicle. Their fundamental difference lies in the nature of the light beam: lasers emit a single, concentrated wavelength, whereas IPL emits a broad spectrum between 500 and 1,200 nm.

Are you hesitating between’permanent laser hair removal and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)? This is a question we hear regularly at Forever Institut. Although both technologies use light to treat unwanted hair, they have significant technical differences that directly influence their effectiveness, safety and results.

In this article, we explain exactly what distinguishes medical lasers from IPL, why Forever Institut has chosen the latest-generation laser, and how to choose the method best suited to your needs.

What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is a medical technology that uses a monochromatic beam of light, i.e. a single wavelength, to precisely target the melanin in the hair follicle. This highly concentrated light is absorbed by the hair pigment, transformed into heat and then permanently destroys the root without damaging the surrounding tissue.

At Forever Institut, we use Clarity by Lutronic lasers, equipped with two complementary technologies:

The Alexandrite laser (755 nm): ideal for light to intermediate phototypes (skins I to III). Very effective on fine and medium hair.

The Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm): designed for darker phototypes (IV to VI) and sensitive areas. Penetrates more deeply and reduces the risk of burning on dark skin.

These medical lasers also incorporate an advanced skin cooling system that protects the epidermis during treatment and makes the session less painful.

What is IPL (intense pulsed light)?

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is not strictly speaking a laser. It is a technology that emits a broad spectrum of light, consisting of several wavelengths generally between 500 and 1200 nm.

Unlike lasers, whose light is focused and monochromatic, IPL disperses its light over a wide range. This diffusion makes the treatment less targeted: the light reaches not only the hair, but also adjacent structures such as the epidermis, blood vessels and surrounding pigments.

IPL is often offered in non-medical beauty salons or as a home appliance. Although it can temporarily reduce hair growth, the results are generally less long-lasting and less uniform than those of medical lasers.

The major technical differences between laser and IPL

1. Precision and targeting of the hair follicle

Medical laser The unique wavelength enables ultra-precise targeting of the hair's melanin. Each pulse acts exactly where it should, selectively destroying the follicle.

IPL the broad spectrum disperses the energy over several targets simultaneously (hairs, skin pigments, vessels). This dispersion reduces the effectiveness on the follicle and increases the risk of side effects such as burns or hyperpigmentation.

2. Penetration power and depth

Medical laser The concentrated light penetrates deep down to the hair root, even in areas with deep follicles (bikini line, underarms, back). Medical lasers such as Clarity achieve high fluence, guaranteeing effective destruction.

IPL Dispersed energy limits the depth of penetration. Deep follicles may not be heated enough to be destroyed, which is why results are often incomplete.

3. Safety and adaptation to skin type

Medical laser Thanks to the precise settings and selection of the appropriate wavelength (Alexandrite or Nd:YAG), the laser is perfectly adapted to each phototype. Built-in cooling systems continuously protect the epidermis.

IPL IPL: the broad spectrum increases the risk of skin reactions, especially on dark, tanned or sensitive skin. Darker phototypes (V and VI) are generally contraindicated for IPL, as the technology cannot effectively differentiate between hair melanin and skin melanin.

4. Sustainability of results

Medical laser According to Forever Institut's clinical protocol, developed over more than 25 years of practice in Geneva and Nyon, laser hair removal offers a permanent reduction of 80 to 90 % in hair growth after a complete protocol of 7 to 10 sessions. Treated hair does not grow back, or only occasionally, particularly in cases of hormonal upheaval.

IPL The results are temporary to semi-permanent. Regrowth is frequent after a few months, requiring regular maintenance sessions. IPL slows down hair growth but does not eliminate it permanently.

Comparison of light hair removal technologies - Forever Institut, Geneva.

Criteria

Alexandrite laser (755 nm)

Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm)

Professional IPL

Domestic IPL

Type of light

Monochromatic

Monochromatic

Broad spectrum (500-1200 nm)

Broad spectrum (500-1200 nm)

Compatible phototypes

I to III

IV to VI

I to IV

I to III only

Penetration depth

High

Very high

Limited

Very limited

Details of the follicle

Maximum

Maximum

Partial

Low

Sustainability of results

Definitive (80-90 %)

Definitive (80-90 %)

Semi-permanent

Temporary

Number of sessions

7 à 10

7 à 10

10 to 15 + interviews

Continuous

Medical supervision

Yes - Forever Institut

Yes - Forever Institut

Not required

Not required

Risk on dark skin

Low

Very low

High

Very high

Available from Forever Institut

Yes

Yes

No

No

Why has Forever Institut chosen medical lasers?

Forever Institut has been using the most advanced laser hair removal technologies for over 25 years. Our choice of the Clarity by Lutronic medical laser is based on rigorous scientific and clinical criteria:

Proven effectiveness: thousands of patients successfully treated in our clinics in Geneva, Nyon and Lausanne.

Maximum safety: integrated cooling systems, personalised settings and constant medical supervision.

Adaptability: two wavelengths (Alexandrite and Nd:YAG) to treat all phototypes in complete safety.

Patient comfort: quick, painless sessions with no social eviction.

Lasting results: permanent reduction in hair growth after the full protocol.

We have deliberately avoided IPL because of its technical limitations and less predictable results. Our commitment to excellence and patient satisfaction drives us to use only the highest-performing medical equipment.

How do you choose between laser and IPL?

The choice between medical laser and IPL depends on your objectives, your skin type and your expectations in terms of results.

Choose a medical laser if :

You're looking for permanent, long-lasting hair removal.

You have matt, dark or sensitive skin.

You want to treat deep or sensitive areas (full bikini line, back, chest).

You give priority to safety and medical supervision.

You want an effective treatment from the very first sessions.

IPL may be suitable if :

You have very light hair growth and fair skin (phototypes I to III).

You accept temporary results requiring regular maintenance.

You're looking for a cost-effective short-term solution (beware: the total cost over several years may exceed that of the laser).

At Forever Institut, we systematically recommend medical lasers to guarantee optimal, safe and long-lasting results. During your initial consultation, Our specialists will assess your situation and guide you towards the most appropriate protocol.

Is laser really more effective than IPL?

Yes, the medical laser offers superior precision and power thanks to its focused monochromatic light. Unlike IPL, which disperses energy over a wide spectrum, the laser targets the hair's melanin exclusively, guaranteeing effective destruction of the hair follicle.

Laser hair removal is now one of the most effective methods of eliminating hair over the long term. But not all lasers are created equal.

For example, if you compare a Diode laser with a laser such as Lutronic's Clarity, the differences are significant in terms of performance and safety.

Firstly, Lutronic's Clarity II laser is a top-of-the-range device that combines two wavelengths: Alexandrite (755nm) and Nd:YAG (1064nm), while offering a wide range of pulse durations, the shortest of which is particularly effective for removing fine, light-coloured hair, which is often persistent after a series of treatments. This triple technology makes it an extremely effective laser, suitable for all skin types.

The major advantages of the Clarity laser :

Speed and precision For fast, high-precision treatment of large areas

Optimum safety integrated cooling technology for comfortable, safe treatment

Lasting results better efficacy on light, fine or residual hair, thanks in particular to the possibility of using very short pulse durations

Suitable for all phototypes the 1064nm wavelength (Nd:YAG) can also be used to remove hair from dark or discretely tanned skin

Efficiency It requires fewer sessions than other types of laser, and maintenance sessions are not compulsory. So yes, it may be more expensive per session, but in finewe're winners!

The main advantage of the Diode laser is that it is less expensive, and this difference can be passed on in the price of the hair removal treatment. However, this laser is less effective, particularly on dark or tanned skin. It is less precise and less effective, resulting in more sessions and the need for regular maintenance.

In conclusion, the choice of laser is crucial to the effectiveness of permanent hair removal. Thanks to its advanced technology, the Clarity laser offers superior, safer and faster results. " At Forever Institut, we have always selected the best technologies, combining safety and effectiveness. That's why our reputation and expertise in laser hair removal (and other treatments) has been a benchmark in the field for 30 years. "concludes Dr Polla, founder of Forever Institut and FMH dermatologist.

The post Pourquoi choisir le laser Clarity de Lutronic pour l’épilation laser appeared first on Forever Institut.

They are particularly interesting products for boosting the skin's own collagen production, and offering a gradual re-tautening of the tissues over the medium term.

What's the difference between them?

What is Radiesse?

The Radiesse® is composed of calcium hydroxyapatite suspended in a carrier gel. This gel produces a slight volume effect that is visible immediately after injection. It gradually fades, giving way to delayed biostimulation, stimulated by CaHA microbeads.

With little inflammatory reaction, it is particularly appreciated on areas where the skin is thinner - typically the oval of the face, the neck, the décolleté and the hands.

In the case of loss of volume coupled with loss of elasticity, Radiesse® can be mixed with hyaluronic acid. It is the ideal combined treatment in this case.

Sculptra® is made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a product recognised by the body as a safe substance.
Scuptra® induces controlled local inflammation over a slightly longer period than Radiesse® or HarmonyCa®, and is therefore particularly effective on the body (buttocks, knees, inner thighs, arms, etc.). Sculptra® restores volume and effectively and naturally treats the signs of skin ageing. Unlike other injectable products, its effects can last for more than 18 months.

Revitalised skin thanks to an unexpected extract... did you know? Trout has a well-kept secret for rejuvenating the skin! In recent years, the polynucleotides derived from its DNA have aroused growing interest in aesthetic medicine. But what exactly are they? And why is this molecule revolutionising regenerative treatments?

What is a polynucleotide?

Polynucleotides are long chains of nucleotides, the 'building blocks' that make up DNA. In a simplified version, we could say that they are like small sequences of purified DNA, capable of acting directly at the heart of our skin.

In aesthetic treatments, the polynucleotides used are extracted in very pure form from trout DNA, a biological source that is particularly well tolerated and devoid of any pathogenic risk for humans.

Why use trout DNA?

Trout is a fish whose DNA is structurally very similar to our own. By extracting its polynucleotides and purifying them rigorously, we obtain a biocompatible molecule with a very low risk of allergic reaction. These extracts are odourless and protein-free, and come in the form of injectable gels.

What are the effects on the skin?

Polynucleotides act on several levels:

Deep hydration Polynucleotides: thanks to their hydrophilic structure, polynucleotides attract and retain water, improving skin suppleness and density.

Stimulation of cell regeneration Polynucleotides activate fibroblasts (the cells responsible for collagen and elastin) and promote tissue repair.

Anti-inflammatory effect Polynucleotides are known to help soothe redness and inflammation of the skin.

Improved texture and complexion By stimulating cell regeneration and deep hydration, the skin becomes smoother, brighter and more even-toned.

In short, they offer a real boostwithout altering the volumes of the face.

Who is this treatment intended for?

This treatment is aimed at anyone wishing to :

Improve the overall quality of your skin (radiance, texture, firmness)

Prevent or reduce the first signs of ageing

Repair damaged skin (after sun, acne, peeling, laser, etc.)

Treating delicate areas such as the eye contour, neck and décolleté

It is just as suitable for young adults looking for prevention as it is for more mature skin looking for a regenerating effect.

How does a session work?

The polynucleotides are injected using mesotherapy (superficial micro-injections) or a very fine needle. The procedure is quick, not very painful and does not require social eviction. Slight redness and oedema (especially around the eyes) may appear, but these usually disappear within a few hours.

A standard protocol involves 2 to 3 sessions spaced a few weeks apart, followed by a maintenance session every 4 to 6 months.

And the results?

The result being natural and progressiveHowever, it is generally necessary to carry out at least 3 sessions to notice this. In some cases, however, it is already possible to see that the skin appears more hydrated and radiant after the first session. Over the weeks, the complexion becomes more even, fine lines fade slightly and the skin becomes more toned.

In conclusion: a molecule to be followed closely

Polynucleotides derived from trout are a remarkable advance in the world of regenerative medicine. They combine safe, efficient and naturalThis is part of a trend towards gentle skin care with long-term preventive action.

True to its reputation as a pioneer in aesthetic medicine, Forever Institut is one of the first aesthetic medicine centres in Europe to offer the revolutionary treatment for acne and excess sebum. Aviclear® is the first laser to focus on the causes of acne and not just its visible side-effects.

AviClear® is the result of over fifteen years of research carried out jointly by the medical devices company Cutera and the Wellman Center for photomedicine in Boston, America's largest laser research centre - the same place where Forever founder Dr L. L. Polla helped discover depilatory lasers in the 1980s.

AviClear® uses a specific laser wavelength to directly target the sebaceous glands responsible for skin eruptions, without (too much) pain or social eviction. Unlike conventional drug treatments, this laser has none of the side-effects associated with antibiotics or retinol, making it an ideal alternative for patients looking for a lasting, stress-free solution.

In addition to treating acne, our first patients to be treated have particularly appreciated :

improvement in facial inflammation - inflammation directly linked to acne

marked improvement in skin quality: deep cysts disappear and skin texture is smoother

Visible, lasting results after just three sessions

An alternative without drugs or side effects, suitable for all phototypes

We are proud to have been selected by Cutera to preview this revolutionary laser. 90% of people suffering from moderate to severe acne say that acne-free skin would change the way they live their lives - it's time to give them this wellbeing thanks to the revolution AviClear®.

Last week my daughter Sasha went on a skiing holiday. And what do mums do when the little ones are away? Well, they dance, of course! So yes, I went out. I went wild. A little, a lot, passionately... At the end of the week, I realised that I wasn't 20 any more and that my dark circles betrayed my short nights. I don't need to draw you a picture: drawn lines, shadows under the eyes, just a tired look! And make-up couldn't do anything about it. So I didn't hesitate to try the famous 'Vampire Lift' at Forever Institut.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) comes from a sample of your own blood, centrifuged to recover the best of it. These magical little molecules are supposed to regenerate our cells, stimulate collagen production and repair tissues. I'll take it!

Firstly, the plasma being injected is yellow, not red. So the term 'Vampire Lift' can be misleading. The other thing I discovered was that the treatment is downright painful - especially as I'm a particularly painful person! So, "I've tested the PRP" quickly came to mean testing the famous "laughing gas" (nitrous oxide) at the same time. For those of you who've never heard of it, this gas quickly goes to your head and clouds your memories, so I went from "I'll never do that treatment again" to "it was really great, thank you very much, when can we do it again?

The pain comes from the acidity of the anticoagulant and the injection technique, which aims to form papules under the skin. Fearing an overdose of hilarity, Dr Bani quickly decided to adapt the technique to my pain tolerance threshold: she opted for mesotherapy (superficial micro-perforations with a needle), which is much more bearable - even if it's a little less effective! The treatment ended with a gentle massage of the face, neck and décolleté using the rest of the plasma mixed with my favourite cream, Kantic by Alchimie Forever.

So, what's the verdict? The very next day, my skin was already clearer, brighter and softer; I even hesitated to put on make-up, which never happens to me! The benefits should intensify over the next few weeks. So yes, I'll do the whole protocol with the 2 other recommended treatments, but I'll put an anaesthetic cream on first!

And I'm still going to see if I can't try another treatment that's less painful but just as well suited to the needs of my skin and my 35-year-old age group...

The post J’ai testé… la PRP appeared first on Forever Institut.

The look is an essential component of the expressiveness and beauty of your face. After introducing the Anti-dark circle injections under-eye concealer, we've extended our 'sublimated eyes' range with the PlexRIts primary indication is to correct the drooping eyelid effect.

The PlexR is a medical device that emits a small ionising current that creates controlled, localised heat to vaporise the tissues, without contact. This phenomenon causes the skin to shrink, producing a slight lifting effect.

This technique is performed on small areas of sagging skin and/or excess skin, such as the upper eyelid, crow's feet and around the lips.

Practical information

PlexR is performed by a doctor and prior consultation is recommended. The PlexR session lasts 45 minutes per treatment area. The skin remains marked for 10 to 15 days, and must be protected from sun exposure until the small scabs and redness have completely disappeared.
