There are two types of sweat glands: eccrine and apocrine. Eccrine sweat glands are present over the entire body but are particularly concentrated in the hand and foot areas, the forehead and the chest. They enable water to evaporate from the surface of the skin. This perspiration helps to regulate the body's internal temperature. The apocrine glands become operational at puberty and can be found in the underarm, breast, ombilical, pubic and peri-anal areas. Their secretion is intermittent and stimulated by fear and sexual emotions. Excess perspiration under the arms can be controlled without any side effects using Botox® injections.
