Stratum corneum

The most external layer of the epidermis that acts as a barrier for the skin. It is made up of compacted corneocytes bound together with bridges called corneosomes. In elderly people or individuals having been exposed excessively to the sun, the stratum corneum tends to be irregular and not very compact. Peels and certain creams are used to regain its functionality.
