The dermis is the tissue that constitutes the skin's medium layer. It is four times thicker that the epidermis (the external layer of the skin). The dermis contains the entire infrastructure needed to the functioning of the underlying epidermis (blood and lymphatic vessels, nerves, etc...). Its main cells are fibroblasts. These are the cells that continually synthesise the extracellular substance made up of collagen, elastic fibres and hyaluronic acid.
